Rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) are a microscopic plankton species harvested at dawn from brackish ponds and canals in late spring and early summer. They are the smallest creatures we offer as a frozen fish food. Rotifers are mainly administered to reef aquaria where the rotifers will be fed upon by filter-feeders such as corals, clams, sea anemones etc. as well as newly hatched marine fish fry. They can also be offered to community aquaria for feeding newborn freshwater fry.
The harvested rotifers are transported to our facility where they undergo a succession of cleaning and sieving steps before being packaged in blisters, quick-frozen, cased out and stored in our cold storage. Only hours pass in between the time the rotifers are harvested and the time they are frozen.
Available only in a sleeved (cardboard) and sealed (aluminum foil) blister (rigid vinyl):
All blisters are frozen individually in our quick-freezer. Each sleeve contains a lot code and date of expiry for tracking purposes. Samples of each lot are submitted to an accredited laboratory for Salmonella analyses before being sold.
